How To Study for Exams
Exams are a fact of life. They are there to test and see how good you are at a topic. It is important to have a good study habit to ensure success. This page is dedicated to helping you pass your next test with some key pointers.
-
Ensure you know what
the test is on and what it will cover. There is nothing worse than
studying for a test to find that what you have studied isn't even
covered. This is easily overcome by asking your teacher or lecturer
what will be in the test.
-
Study in s
similar
environment that you will be in for the test. This makes it easier
to remember things at the time. A library is a good place too as
this will have a
similar
noise level as your examination room.
-
Don't listen to
music. Music can distract you while you study so during your exam
all you will be able to remember is that song you liked so much.
-
Highlight key points.
Go through your material and use different coloured highlighters to
identify key points that you will look at closer later on.
-
Never leave studying
to the night before. This is called cramming and is guaranteed to
not work for you. You should study for a minimum of a week before.
-
Do examples. Get use to writing out
examples and see how they work. If it is a math paper, this will
also help you understand the calculator.
-
Get someone to read to you. If you
are unsure of a concept or word or meaning, get a friend or family
member to read it out to you.
-
Read aloud. Reading aloud can also
help you understand and grasp a topic well as it becomes reinforced.
-
Keep a schedule. It is important to
study at around the same time every day. This makes it easier for
you to get into a good habit of study.
-
Don't over-do-it. Yes, you can over
study.
-
If you are under 14 years, it is
a good idea to study for 30 minutes with a 10 minute brake and
then another 30 minutes.
-
If you are under 18 years, it is
a good idea to study for 50 minutes with a 10 minute brake and
then for another 50 minutes.
-
If you are over 18 years, it is
a good idea to study for 1 hour with a 10 minute brake and then
for another 1 hour.
When you have your brake it is
recommended that you don't go watch TV, or listen to the radio as
this will make it very hard for you to start studying again.
-
Keep hydrated. Your brain needs
water to operate properly and drinking water will help. In most
exams you are aloud to take plain water bottles into the room - but
it is recommended that you ask before the exam.
If you put all this into practice, you will be well on the way to passing your next test. Please feel free to print this page to help you. Click the link below.
