TK For Kids  -  How To Create A Speech

Speeches, like reports, are a fact of life. It can be very difficult to present a speech to a large audience but with a good speech, you have nothing to worry about.

Speeches are created using the following headings:
  • Introduction. This is a paragraph that states what you will be talking about in the rest of the speech.

  • Main Body/Findings. This is where you present your work in a formal manure.

    • History. History is a good place to start providing background into your discussion.

    • Development. Development is showing how your report topic got to where it is today.

    • How it affects us. How do we use your report topic in today's society.

    • The Future. This is where you think your report topic will be headed in the future.

  • Summary/Conclusion. This is a paragraph which sums up what you have said in the body.

It is a good idea to know who long you need to talk for, a five minute speech is approximately two A4 page with size 14 font. You don't want to be presenting you speech with your audience getting board.

Have an understanding of who you will be presenting the speech to. If it is only adults, you may want to use "technical language". Where as if you are presenting it to someone younger than yourself, it is an idea to use simple language and words.

Delivery of the speech is a key part. You need to stand tall, and look strong. Have one hand down by your side, while the other one holds your notes in front of you. This makes you look appealing to the audience. Never stand there and read your speech. By looking up at different parts of audience is a good delivery technique.

Cue Cards are very helpful. These are small peaces of paper with key points on so that you can remember what you want to say. By doing this, it will allow you to look up at the audience more. It is also important to number your cards so that if you drop them, it is easy to put them back in order.

Practice is also important. this makes it easier and more natural for you to present your speech. Practicing in the mirror is a great way to see how you look when presenting. You could also present your speech to family members and get feed back and tips.

When talking, speak clearly and slowly - this makes it easier for the people listening to understand what you are saying.

For some people presenting speeches comes naturally, for others it is more difficult, but by putting all these things into practice, you will ensure a successful and great speech.
