The How Too Guides :: HTML Computer Below is an easy step by step guide to how to make a website. This set of instructions can be used in programs line Microsoft Script Editor, FrontPage, Microsoft Word. Creating a new webpage Open a blank document with in the program of choice. Once you have a blank page click "File", "Save As". At the bottom of the save box, make sure that it says "Webpage" or "HTML Document". If it doesn't, click on the down arrow, and choose one of the above formats. You can now give your document a name. Tip: Your home page must be called "index", this is so your Internet browser knows what page is home. At this stage it is also a good idea to change the title of your document - click on the button called, "Change Title" which is somewhere near where you have typed in your file name. The title is the name you want your website to be called; this will appear at the top of the Internet browser. E.G., if you website is on animals, you would call it, animals. This can be different from what you save the file as. Background Colour You are now well on the way to getting your website up and running. You can change the background colour by right clicking on the blank document. This will bring up more options. Choose "Page Properties" or "Background". You may also find backgrounds under "Format", "Background" on your toolbar at the top of the screen. You will now have an option of having a plan coloured background, or you may be able to insert an image or mix of colours. Have a play around with different settings to see what you like. Remember to save your document after you make any changes you want to keep. Typing text You can have text anywhere on your webpage simply by clicking where you want the text and typing it out. You can also format the text to change its colour, size, font and alignment. This can be done by a wide range of tools at the top of your screen. This works like a normal Word document. Note: Any "Word Art" used will be saved as an image. Inserting Images Click on "insert", "picture" or "image" located at the top of the screen. You can then select an image from an already saved file or clip art. Once you have made your selection, you can resize it and move it to your desired position - although you may not be able to get it in the exact place you want it. It is now a good time to save your document and by saving, it will now crate a folder where the images will be stored. The folder will be named after your existing document. When putting your website on the Internet, you will need to create this folder with the exact same name as what the word crated and up load the images into that folder. You may want to open your document in the Internet browser to see how it looks. Adding Hyperlinks A Hyperlink is a link that works on the internet and directs the user to its desired location. You may want to hyperlink a text line, or an image. You can do this by highlighting the text or image and right clicking on it. Now look for "Hyperlink" on the options. This will bring up a new window where you can type out the hyperlink or choose a file you already have on your computer. You can type out the hyperlink in the "address" box. Once you have clicked OK, the text you selected will turn blue or a different colour. When you run your mouse over this text, a hand will appear to indicate it is a link. A hyperlinked image will also be similar. Bulletpointing Your Work When listing a lot of information, it may be a good idea to bulletpoint them. This can be done by clicking on the "bulletpoint" button on the toolbars at the top of your screen. You can also customise the shape, size and colours of the bulletpoints. Adding Web Dividers To help the reader of your website, you could use web dividers. These are lines which go across the screen to break up different parts of the same document. You can use images or a plain line that you can change the colour of. There are many different ways of getting a web divider, so just look around until you find one you like. If you have an image as a web divider, you will need to upload this image to the internet when uploading your webpage. Checking Your Work You can check your work by opening your web browser, and opening your file. If everything looks like it should, then you can keep working on it or you can upload it to the Internet. Remember, not everyone has a fast computer / modem, so you shouldn't get to flash! Uploading Your Work On The Web! Remember you should ask an adult to help you upload your work. To upload your work, you will first need to find a web host. You will need to create you own domain name; this will be generally what your website will be about. E.G. YOUR_ DOMAIN_ NAME.tiki.com is what it would look like if you were using us as a web host. Once you have created your domain name and have finished, you will need to now upload all your file. This includes creating folders on the internet for where your images are to be uploaded. By clicking on Browse you will be able to choose your files off your hard drive. For some web hosting website, may need to go to something like, "Quick Upload". Keep uploading all the files that you have created until you think you have finished. You can check by going to your own website, and seeing if everything looks like it should, if not, you should try and upload those files that do not work. Notes: Remember it will take months for you to create the perfect website. There will be a lot of trial and error to try and make this thing work. If things don't go right, or things get to tough, keep at it and don't give up.
